This week we explored the theme of Creativity in our daily sessions. Bloom Pause is a community offering that meets remotely using Zoom. Each week we explore a new theme through discussion, sharing, meditation, and practices to improve daily life. If you'd like to join Bloom Pause, sign up here.
From Brene' Brown's book, The Gifts of Imperfection, her 6th Guidepost for a wholehearted living is this week's theme: Bloom Creativity - Release Comparison. The following is from her research:
COMPARISON is all about conformity and competition. At first, it seems like conforming and competing are mutually exclusive, but they're not. When we compare, we want to see who or what is best out of a specific collection of "alike things."... The comparison mandate becomes this crushing paradox of "fit in and stand out! It's not cultivate, self-acceptance, belonging, and authenticity; it's be just like everyone but better... Comparison is the thief of happiness.
CREATIVITY: We are all creative - the only difference is whether we use it or not... it lives within us until we express it, neglect it to death or suffocate it by resentment and fear. Creativity is the expression of our originality. It helps us stay mindful that what we bring to the world is completely original and cannot be compared. Without comparison, concepts, like getting ahead or falling behind or being the best or worst, lose their meaning, and thus they lose their power over us.
Questions for reflections:
I offer the serenity prayer as the suggested practice:
God/HP (higher power), grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
the courage to change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference.
Let it begin with me.
And, so it is.
